He centres decolonization as a practice of reorientation, reconnecting people to land, foregrounding Black and Indigenous knowledge as primary reference points, and unsettling Eurocentric frameworks of aesthetics, authorship, and collaboration. His storytelling is particularly attentive to lineage, memory, and cultural inheritance, while remaining open to fluidity across borders and identity.  Film is a central part of his creative practice where he re-situates inherited fears, unresolved histories, and cultural memory within modern, diasporic realities.

Jerel’s work has showcased at the Green Screen Film Festival, where it won the Best in Trinidad and Tobago Film Award in 2015, Caribbean Film Festival, Georgetown Film Festival, 12ºN, 61ºW Grenada Film Festival, CANEX Shorts and CaribbeanTales International Film Festival.  His projects have also been featured at The Place, London, Alice Yard, National Academy for the Performing Arts, The Rotunda Gallery, and Central Bank Museum of Trinidad and Tobago. 

In 2018, he was awarded by Florida College Systems Publications, Associated Collegiate Press, College Media Association and Columbia Scholastic Press.
