Since 2025, I have documented Vulgar Fraction’s annual Carnival presentations from within the band, working closely alongside the Robert Young-led collective as artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners use Carnival as a space for liberation, protest, and public voice.
Vulgar Fraction is a small band with a clear and urgent message. Their work returns to Carnival as a form of resistance: a space for confronting what is wrong in society, challenging respectability, and standing with those who are too often unheard or unprotected.
Their 2026 presentation, Tantiblak, continues this commitment through a direct conversation against anti-Blackness, using mas as a public language for critique, memory, and collective refusal.
Below are excerpts from their 2026 presentation.
